This past weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival Simon Kinberg was on The Martian panel, because he’s a  producer on it. During an interview with MTV he stated that the Gambit and Deadpool movies would both be set in a post X-Men: Days of Future Past universe and they are planing to cross all the characters from the movies.

The idea is that we’ve sort of reset the timeline after ’Days of Future Past’ in some ways, and if not erased, certainly allowed for change from ’X1,’ ’2,’ ’3,’ everything from ’Days of Future Past’ forward, 1973, everything we set now becomes canon…So the ’Gambit’ movie, the ’Deadpool’ movie, will exist in a world that acknowledges whatever happened in ’Days of Future Past’ and moving forward. Doesn’t mean they’ll always interact with those characters, obviously, it’s not like every movie has all the characters, but they all have to exist within the same rules…There will be interplay between different characters in different movies

This does mean that we could see one of the story arcs from the Deadpool series where he joins the X-Men and annoys them all in a very comical way, or we could finally get to see the Gambit and Rogue relationship from the animated series. FOX isn’t having the best time with movies outside of the newest X-Men and of course Deadpool, because Deadpool is amazing and he can do no wrong. Gambit can only stay afloat if they make interesting characters and don’t go too far obscure with his rogues gallery. If it fails then Gambit could be just a one shot as he’s quietly merged into X-Men movies as part of the team, and not solo.
