There are some first person shooters that were great in the past. They broke barriers and introduced the world to new ways of having immersive game play. In 1991 the world was introduced to Duke Nukem, the gun toting, foul mouth warrior who stood up for all Americans. He was there to kick ass and kill aliens to get the girl and also save humanity, it was fun the first round of games, but after a while it wasn’t exciting anymore. Gearbox tried to resurrect the franchise after over a decade of being away and after a few delay it came out to lackluster reviews. I played the demo to see if it was something I wanted to play and it was boring and introduced nothing new.
We all thought that Duke Nukem would never come back to our consoles and stay the butt of most video game jokes, but that may not be what’s happening. Recently at Develop 2015 Randy Pitchford stated that he would like to work on another Duke Nukem game with an outside developer. The reason why Gearbox isn’t developing it, Pitchford stated, is because they are very busy with other projects.
In my opinion the book is closed on Duke Nukem and any future solo games. If you want to throw him into a fighting game as a special character or even a cart racer with an over sized hot rod and topless girls in his backseat, then do that. I just don’t think that the era of gamers is ready to see another Duke Nukem game, if they really want to test the waters release an HD version of the original game for $10.
