It looks like what we all thought was true as it was announced that Square Enix and Marvel are teaming up with developer Crystal Dynamics to bring us The Avengers Project. At 7 am this morning the announcement trailer was released, and even thought we were given 51 seconds of exposition I still have no idea what this is all about.
According to the YouTube description, this will be a multi-year and multi-game partnership, which I take as multiple super hero games are on their way. In the comics the Avengers have a huge ever changing roster of people, but we only saw a few hints in the above announcement trailer of who we may be seeing in games. The first thing we see are a pair of glasses and a ripped open wall, which I tie to Bruce Banner aka The Hulk, we then see Thor‘s hammer and some lightning, Iron Man’s glove and Captain America’s shield. The voice is of an unknown woman, but it could be Black Widow tasked with bringing all of The Avengers together like in the movies.
I just had a huge revelation with that last sentence I wrote, what if they are doing what they do with the movies with these new games. You play each of these heroes in their own story, but as the game goes on you get introduced to characters with the ending of the game being an invitation to The Avengers. If the characters shown in the trailer are what we’re getting then at the end of the 4 games they will come together in an Avengers game that may coincide with the release of the Infinity War movies. We could finally get a use for the Kinect, as I mentioned so very long ago, along with a huge roster of side characters like in the LEGO games.
No release date has been set and the website for Square Enix, Marvel and Crystal Dynamics don’t have any information, so I will sit here and wait to see if what I predicted was true and we get individual games leading up to one big game.
