Each Monday I like to take a look at a piece of media that stands out to me. This could be anything from an episode of a TV show or cartoon or just an album I think you should enjoy.

This week we are taking a look episode 2 or season 1 of Freakazoid!

Title: Candle Jack/Toby Danger in Doomsday/The Bet

Air Date: September 16, 1996

Freakazoid! came around the time of the Animaniacs and Histeria shows and was predicated on a 4th wall breaking over the top goofy superhero who had villains who were equally over the top. I like all the episodes, but just by coincidence I was telling someone the other day that the Candle Jack episode stands out as one of the funniest ones. The other two segments of the cartoon are enjoyable, but by far Candle Jack is an awesome villain and makes the opening cartoon the best.

Candle Jack is a ghostly figure who can only capture you if you say his name, much like if you say Bloody Mary three times into a mirror. The best thing is, he’s not even that menacing. He looks like Oogie Boogie and the Scarecrow were thrown together given a smart ass personality. Why hasn’t anyone dressed up as him at any conventions?

He approaches you with a permanent smile and a soft voice but nothing about him screams scary. There’s no evidence that states that he actually hurts anyone that he takes, and in fact during the episode he’s actually going to charter a bus to transport everyone he has tied up. I don’t know about you, but a warm soft cushioned bus is a lot nicer than being dragged through the forest. Take a couple of minutes and enjoy the first cartoon featuring Candle Jack
