Space Station A6-100 is a top down twin stick shooter that has you going through different sections of your space station, and clearing out various aliens. I came across this on my Ouya as a free to play game, but it’s also available on PC and other Android devices.
There isn’t much to the story other than what I stated above, but with no other characters in the game other than yourself there doesn’t need to be one. There is no set pathway and as you progress though the levels there are more and more doors to open, expanding the map on that level. Your end goal for each level is to find a blue 3.5 floppy disc, this ends the level. The secondary goal of each level is to get the highest score, which didn’t really matter to me because I was by myself playing this. Each level has an array of small aliens that give you points, depending on how big they are, and no time limit. The time limit is a big thing, because if you were going for a certain score, then you’d want time to go through every room and kill every alien.
Most of the rooms are not only filled with aliens, but breakable crates. You use your gun, which has unlimited ammo, to not only kill aliens but break open these crates to find new guns. Your primary weapon may not have a bullet limit, but all the guns you pick up do. There are also multiple gun variations per room and it’s up to you to find the but not pick one up until the gun you have is out of ammunition. If you have a gun and you pick up another, then you lose the first gun you picked up. The slot is taken up by any new gun you get, and at the end you resort back to your primary weapon. Some of the weapons add another stream of bullets, turn your gun into a machine gun, become a rocket launcher with regular or heat seeking missles or a lightening gun, which is my favorite. As I mentioned above, this is a twin stick shooter so all you use is the sticks. The face buttons can be used, but it’s easier to press a stick one way then repeatedly tap a button.
One of the best parts of this game is the music, which is reminiscent of old 8 bit music. The soundtrack reminds me of an old chip tune song that had evolved into a techno song. If anything, just start a level and enjoy the music.
After playing about 8 levels I turned it off, but not because I wasn’t having fun I just had something else to do. My only negative thoughts about this game are the fact that there are no health replenishes in the levels and that there are no boss battles. After a while you just play level after level, and all I want is boss to break up the monotony. Other than that, I did really enjoy this game. The twin stick element is easy and in this environment it works. There is a lot of room to move around so you never feel trapped when you’re in a room, you can always leave even if there are enemies there. If you want to play it, you can do so in your browser here, download it for free here for your PC. get the apk here or download it from Gamestick here.
