Months ago it was revealed that The Muppets would be gracing our television screens once more as a weekly show. When I first heard this, I thought they may go back to their variety hour type format where they had skits and celebrities but new information was released about what the show will really be about.
EW broke the news yesterday and included this ABC logline
The Muppets return to prime time with a contemporary, documentary-style show that—for the first time ever—will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, break-ups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires; a more adult Muppet show, for kids of all ages.
So it looks like The Muppets will be more like The Office and less like Saturday Night Live. See, I could have made a joke about The Muppets never being Saturday Night Live because The Muppets are funny, but that would be just mean. In fact what I do want to see if some of these shots featuring The Muppets
The best part of these shots would be the looks on The Muppets faces. They can’t really express complex emotion so their face facial expression would only make these zoom in shots that much funnier.
I guess the big question that no one is asking is will Kermit and Miss Piggy be the new Jim and Pam? Will this chronicle their relationship or the beginning of one? The Muppets have a few musical characters so I think Rowlf the Dog and Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem should have clashing story lines where they are both are going for the same gigs. Grover can take it upon himself to become Super Grover at night and Gonzo can hang out with Rizzo and be the comic relief.
I actually think that this is going to work and be a pretty funny show. If they get an 8pm time slot they could throw in some low level adult jokes while keeping it family friendly. But, it could also be the place to have Ernie and Bert announce their secret rap career
