Way Back Wednesday – Super Smash Bros.

With the recent passing of Nintendo‘s Satoru Iwata, I figured this Way Back Wednesday would be a game that he had a hand in. To be honest, you probably couldn’t name off a game that you loved playing on any of the Nintendo systems that he didn’t have a hand in. Satoru was a programmer, a producer, the president of Nintendo but he was always a gamer at heart.

With all that being said, let us get to one of the most famous games that Satoru Iwata had a hand in. He was the producer for the original smash bros. on the Nintendo 64, Super Smash Bros.. The game that would spawn multiple sequels and be a part of competitions. The game pitted in famous Nintendo characters against each other in battle. The story didn’t really set in until later games where you find out that Master Hand is really a person playing with these toys and making them all fight.

For the first time Mario wasn’t the best characters to use. He had some iconic moves from previous games, but for me Link was my go to fighter. Even people found that Kirby and Pikachu were valuable characters and some people found ways to spam their moves for their advantage.

Much like Goldeneye, Super Smash Bros. was a party game that allowed four people to play simultaneously. There were quick alliances that turned back to enemies once a character two players were going after was gone, and the variety of moves from the large roster allowed for many combinations to be created.

Looking back, I think that most of the games that Satoru Iwata had a hand in were actually part of the Super Smash Bros. game.  Here is a full list of what he had a hand in
