This time, we’re traveling to the kingdom of Yuria for a complete playthrough of Sega’s legendary arcade beat ’em up, Golden Axe!
After watching the animated adaptation on Paramount+, I had to return to the game that started it all. Golden Axe brought back a ton of memories of playing the Sega Genesis version with my friend—but the arcade adventure was much shorter than I remembered!
The rules are still the same: defeat everything standing in your way, ride dragons and weird chicken-looking creatures, kick tiny thieves for magic potions, and unleash that magic on Death Adder’s army.
Developed and published by Sega in 1989, Golden Axe combines the side-scrolling action of games like Double Dragon with a fantasy world inspired by Conan the Barbarian and The Lord of the Rings. Players can choose between Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead, each with their own strengths, weapons, and magical abilities.
