This time we’re heading back to 1990 to take on Technōs Japan’s arcade beat-’em-up THE COMBATRIBES!
This was my first time ever playing The Combatribes, and as a huge fan of side-scrolling beat-’em-ups, I was ready to punch and kick my way through New York City.
What I wasn’t ready for was just how badly this game wanted my imaginary quarters. 😂
Six Acts. Giant bosses. Circus performers. Rollerblading hockey players. An empty baseball stadium. The mandatory beat-’em-up elevator fight. A boss rush. And eventually I started asking one very important question…
ARE WE THE BAD GUYS?!
But The Combatribes saves its greatest weapon for the player: THE TIMER.
Not only can inserting another quarter increase your health, it can also reset the clock — meaning sometimes you’re not pumping quarters into the machine because you died…
You’re doing it because TIME killed you.
Now THAT’S a Quarter Eater. 🪙
